Spring 2018

In the spring of 2018, Phillip Byron Jones successfully obtained an Opinion from the Tennessee Court of Appeals, which expanded personal jurisdiction in an international transaction over an individual residing in Italy and over a company based in Mauritius (just off the Coast of Africa). The case of ASSET v. OHR, et al., involved security services provided for the transfer of gold from one country in Africa to another country in Africa. Mr. Jones’ client, which is based in Nashville, was retained by individuals from abroad and later sought to recover the balance owed for its fees. While the Trial Court found that jurisdiction did not exist, the Court of Appeals, in a lengthy Opinion, held that personal jurisdiction existed for such international transactions in today’s global economy.
